A Writing Center is fundamental to have in a high school. It enriches students with support and guidance that a teacher cannot provide and unlocks hidden potential in students.
When writing a paper, students should be able to get meaningful advice and instruction from their teachers whenever they need it. In actuality, that is quite the opposite. Many teachers have a lot of students and do not have the time to sit down with them to discuss essays when a student is confused. If students are lucky enough to get direct help from a teacher, the comments can be very vague and provide no help. Without a teacher’s support, students are left with no one to ask for help which can be discouraging due to the fact that “...students also need someone to sit with them, one-to-one, to help them notice what’s important in their learning to write and in their own writing, and then act on both”(12). Students need to have a support system in their favor, not against them.

The Writing Center helps to prevent any student from being discouraged. It provides a more open, less intimidating place for students who do not work well in a harsh classroom environment. Tutors will have different perspectives than a teacher making it more beneficial “because tutors are also students, they know what other students face as they try to improve as writers”(12). The Writing Center also gives more freedom of expression to students because they will not just tell students what to write like a teacher would. Tutors help the student to further their thinking without completely revealing answers or telling them what to do. The student benefits from it simply because “The more decisions students make, the greater their agency in their own learning. Over time, this process empowers students”(10). Giving students independence and power sparks a new thinking process that can change a student’s writing style in the best way possible.
