As the next school year approaches we are sure you all are curious and excited to see what it will be like to be a writing center tutor! This page is here to help ease that transition and make you feel prepared for starting the next school year. To start thinking about your responsibilities as a future tutor, we had some current tutors discuss projects they have been involved with as a part of this class! At the bottom you can also find helpful tips from current tutors and videos.
Asha Noralez: Website worker
"My long term project has been updating the writing center website. Working on this site has really helped me in developing my website design skills which has also benefited me in my web design class. My responsibilities include making new pages (like this one!) and updating the site weekly to account for updates and current events." |
Jazmin Hernandez: Website worker
"I started working on the website in my second semester being in the writing center, and had previously been a part of the event planning team. I think every single project available in the writing center is a unique experience that helps you learn more about a particular genre and collaboration. There are many project options aside from event planning and web maintenance, such as social media management, decorations, and others. You are really able to explore what interests you, and form really strong bonds with your peers as you work together to make your vision come to life"

RESOURCES FOR YOU FUTURE TUTORS
Introductions
1)You always want to start out with an introduction of yourself and your student. For example "Hello my name is ...... What is your name?" is standard but very effective to have the student remember you.
2) Always ask what they need help with. Make sure you ask the specifics. As a tutor you are always going to have excess knowledge on a subject but pin pointing what the student needs is a big help. This way you don't overwhelm the with more information then they need to pass the next test.
3)Although this is weird make sure that you try to relate with the student that way they are comfortable to come back to you with any questions.
Professional
1)Making the environment more friendly can create a better environment for learning and remembering the information taught in a tutoring session. In my past experience, I've noticed when people become more comfortable with me they tend to ask for more help and become more honest about their struggles. Tutors have to remember that these are new students that just arrived at Lindblom or just struggle in a particular subject.
2)When it comes to writing center tutors it is essential when collaborating together that the information is sent out early. This is why emailing is very important for us. This way when working on a project we can get information out quicker before the deadline. As tutors we don't have all the answers to their questions so it is important that you can also get outside information from teachers.
Tutoring
1)Embrace your struggles because then both you and your student learns something new. I always make sure that we both understand the fundamentals of each type of equation. By the end of my session, students are able to practice on their own.
Conclusion
1) Always end the session on a positive note
2) Go over everything you accomplished
3) End off with any clarifying questions
